The Problem
Stryker faces challenges with fragmented navigation due to separate general and Diversity Supplier Portals, limiting access to ESG data and reducing sourcing efficiency. The lack of integration and inconsistent ESG tracking complicates compliance monitoring, increasing the risk of delays and financial losses.
The Solution
Consolidate the general and Diversity Supplier Portals into a unified platform for better navigation, integrate ESG tracking for more efficient sourcing, and implement automated ESG reporting to enable real-time monitoring and reduce risks.

Guiding Principles for Supplier Portals
Key Insights
A supplier portal provides organizations with the opportunity to automate various administrative tasks that can otherwise be overly time-consuming. This could include inputting data, or sourcing and providing copies of documents, such as invoices and reminders.
The Importance of DEI
Stryker is dedicated to enhancing supply chain diversity by supporting businesses owned by underrepresented groups, including those with disabilities, LGBTQ+ individuals, minorities, veterans, and women. The Supplier Diversity Council drives this initiative, collaborating with organizations like NMSDC, and WBENC to foster inclusive procurement practices.
Protecting suppliers from forced labor, discrimination, and trafficking.
Stryker's Supplier Code of Conduct covers ethics, human rights, labor safety, and environmental standards. The Direct Procurement team offers annual training on fair labor and safety, expecting partners to uphold these values in support of its mission to improve healthcare and benefit communities.
Scope 3 Emissions
Stryker is targeting Scope 3 emissions, which make up 95% of its carbon footprint from supply chain, transportation, and travel. Stryker co-leads healthcare decarbonization efforts and participates in the US EPA's SmartWay program.
User Interviews & Key Insights
Only 28.6% of participants tracked carbon emissions and charged their practices as a result.
50% of participants said their team had full visibility of the invoice process

Suppliers
Responsibilities
Operate ethically and lawfully prioritizing accountability compliance, anti-discrimination, sustainability and health and safety standards.
Practices
Streamline approval requirements, gather data for investment decisions, identify ESG risks by industry or region, and evaluate performance using KPIs.
Pain Points
Manage supplier portal input, ensure small businesses adopt RSG practices, and oversee third-party compliance.
Carbon Management
Responsibilities
Manage portal input, ensure small businesses adopt RSG practices, and oversee compliance.
Practices
Stryker is calculating its baseline Scope 3 emissions and plans to submit a science-based target this year while enhancing freight efficiency as an EPA SmartWay member.
Pain Points
Ninety-five percent of Stryker's carbon footprint is from Scope 3 emissions, including supply chain and transportation.
Diversity Council
Responsibilities
Build awareness by retaining and growing diverse suppliers, and identifying potential suppliers.
Practices
In 2022, Stryker maintained memberships with Disability:IN, MSDC, and WBENC to support diverse suppliers.
Pain Points
Many businesses find it challenging to locate diverse suppliers that meet their specific needs. Stryker's initiative for diverse suppliers involves a time-consuming and costly vetting process.
Jobs-to-be-done
Finding functional, user-centric designs by focusing on user behavior, intent, usability and efficiency.
Supplier Onboarding
Potential suppliers will need to be audited and provide assessment before partnering with Stryker. This will ensure qualified suppliers.
Supplier Boarding
Qualified suppliers in good standing will receive access to Stryker’s supplier portal.
Report and compare against industry standards (GHG Protocol or CDP)
Identify high-emission suppliers and manage low-carbon alternatives
Tracking third party suppliers’ diversity and inclusion efforts.
Provide visibility into the entire supply chain allowing shared information on processes.
Help track environmental risk while third party helps mitigate operational and compliance risks.

Reflection
This project helped me better understand methods for measuring emissions with direct and indirect suppliers. I learned about the gaps, obstacles, and opportunities within the supply chain. After several interviews, I focused on creating user-aligned features for both direct and indirect suppliers. The scope of the project evolved into a supplier portal redesign with the capacity to track ESG emissions. It helped me appreciate the need for adaptability, as the project developed in unexpected ways as I learned more about the procurement process. I'm excited for future challenges and the opportunity to create even better products.
